the gift

My birthday is around the corner. In the past I looked forward to them, maybe even planned something fun. Now it’s more of a reminder ... what are my goals, have I accomplished any of them, what do I hope for ... a constant introspection. This is what I was pondering when I dragged myself out of bed to walk the trail. I haven’t been good to my knees (another reminder of the whole aging process) so I’ve vowed to get back on track with walking, swimming, and yoga. 

Despite the perfect weather, I was inwardly cursing my allergies (this why I cannot enjoy fall) and feeling unfit. Then it happened. A beautiful doe appeared and just stopped in front of my path. I quickly took a photo knowing the whole time she would run away. But she did not. It was as if she knew I meant no harm, and we spent a good moment staring at each other.
And I thought, what a gift.
