I heart Chicago
Friday, July 2, 2010
Every visit to Chicago gets better each time. So when Matt surprised me with an anniversary getaway, I was thrilled. We stayed at the Millennium Knickerbocker Hotel, which is across from The Drake, a block from Michigan Avenue and a few blocks from Lake Shore Drive. Perfect. Ren Reiske © All Rights Reserved.

It was early evening and balmy, strolling weather. We walked around and serendipitously found one of the best steak restaurants — Saloon Steakhouse. Fillet Medallions with bleu cheese and Yukon potatoes.

Another beautiful summer day (a bit hot and humid at times) — just right for baseball. We took the L train to Wrigley Field. Matt is a loyal Cubs fan. It was 90 degrees and a family from California dressed in matching plaid sweaters asked me to take their photo in front of the Wrigley sign for their Christmas card. I quickly obliged because the younger boys were not happy and quickly undressed to shorts when it was over. Now there’s a loyal fan!

The Cubs beat Cincinatti Reds 3-1. By 4:30 p.m. we headed back to Grant Park and met up with my cousin, Laura, for the Taste of Chicago. The heat and crowd reminded me of Lollapalooza, but instead of music, there was an abundance of good food.
Best tasty entree: Las Tablas Steakhouse sampler of chicken or steak with plantain.
I loved the upside down caramel cupcake from Abundance Bakery. Laura sampled a slice of Rainbow cake roll from Original Rainbow Cone.

We planned to spend most of the day at the Navy Pier until the fireworks show. It was another warm, beautiful day which began with brunch at Feast.
5:10 p.m. It was our first IMAX experience and seeing Eclipse was even bigger and better the second time. AWEsome! By the time the movie ended at 7:30, Navy Pier was packed and security limited the crowd by closing off the entrances.

We walked the magnificent mile towards the Navy Pier again for the Seadog speed boat and architectural tour ride. I was completely soaked during the speed ride, but we dried off in the blazing heat during the hour-long tour.

After the tour, we checked out the Harley store downtown, then ate lunch at Heaven on Seven on Rush Street. Cajun delight!

Guitar girl
Two days before my birthday I was having dinner with Matt and he says,“Do you want to open your present tonight?” He was relentless about it because if you know Matt, he doesn’t like to wait when it comes to presents. It’s worse around the holidays. Then it dawns on me … “You didn’t get me anything at the Harley store, did you?”
Matt is a new owner and rider of a Harley Fat Bob motorcycle. This is his latest passion. He gives me this look, bows his head and mumbles something like, “I guess you don’t want to open it tonight.”
I’m convinced he bought me a helmet or boots so I could ride with him. I’m obviously not pleased about this. We get home and he walks by his bike and pats the back of his Harley, as if to suggest that he bought a back seat rest. I ignore him and walk in the house. Unbelievable.
A few minutes later he calls me downstairs and I’ve already put this all behind me. I walk in my study and there is this big black case … in the shape of a GUITAR! I believe I actually squealed and jumped up and down.
I have been talking about wanting to learn how to play a guitar since summer. I took lessons and played the piano in my youth, so I knew that I could pick up reading music and be very passionate about learning a new instrument. This was a new goal of mine and I was ecstatic. He surprised me. Unbelievable.
